Grand Theft Auto 5, a title that’s been around and kicking for over a decade, could soon be running on newer platforms. Rockstar Games’ GTA 5 mobile is currently playable on PC alongside PlayStation and Xbox consoles. Now, a group of modders are trying to run GTA 5 on Nintendo Switch console, Android phones, and PCs that run the Linux operating system.

Fansite GTA Focal reported (spotted by GameSpot) that the modders are figuring out how to achieve this by making use of the source code leaked last year. The X (formerly Twitter) page also posted a video showcasing the GTA 5 loading screen followed by a series of errors during loading, to display the modders’ attempt to get the open-world game running on Nintendo Switch. There is another image which shows an error message on an GTA 5 mobile Android phone, confirming that the modders are trying to achieve the same for Android smartphones as well.

GTA 5 came out in 2013, originally for the PS3 and Xbox 360 consoles. Compared to the duo, the Nintendo Switch is a more powerful console that should be able to handle a previous build of GTA 5. However, the game has received several GTA 5 mobile upgrades since then for newer generations of consoles, so it would be a bigger ask of Nintendo Switch to run a GTA 5 build made for the likes of PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

The aforementioned GTA 5 source code leak, which is reportedly aiding these modders in their task, took place in December 2023. This leak occurred GTA 5 mobile due to a major hack that Rockstar Games suffered.
